Environmental Corporate Responsibility

National Retail Systems Inc. (NRS), a New Jersey-based provider of global logistics services to America's retailers, pharmaceutical companies and CPG manufacturers, has dedicated staff, resources and investment to developing an industry-leading Environmental Corporate Responsibility initiative. As part of this initiative, we are proud to be a SmartWay Transport Partnership Carrier, providing "green" solutions for supply chain management and logistics execution.

"Our customers are the leading brand names people see everyday at their local shopping mall or chain store," said Francis Walsh III, Executive Vice President of NRS. "They are 100% committed to providing the best products to the American consumer at affordable prices and in the most environmentally-sensitive way possible. We support that effort."

  • Clean Air Trucks
    • NRS has deployed 115 Clean Air pier trucks to comply with the Clean Truck Program requirements in effect at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
    • Under Clean Truck Program provisions, the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach have created a not-for-profit company called PortCheck to collect a $70 per 40-foot shipping container fee for shipments entering and leaving the port on a non U.S. EPA 2007 compliant truck. Cargo owners are responsible for paying the fee before a loaded container can enter or leave any marine terminal in Los Angeles or Long Beach.
    • NRS has deployed a Clean Truck pier fleet to avoid these fees for customers, with capacity to handle 70,000 TEU imports per year and plans to increase the fleet to handle 300,000 TEU imports per year in 2010.

  • Idle Management Policy
    • Idling control strategies reduce the amount of emissions created by idling tractors. NRS has many strategies in place to reduce the amount of unnecessary emissions caused by idling, including Truck Stop Electrification, Engine Shutdown Policies, and Double Team Drivers.

  • Speed Management Policy
    • NRS has restrictors on tractors that keep engines from accelerating past a certain MPH. Speed Management Policies help protect over use of an engine and accelerating past the necessary RPMs, which improves fuel efficiency.

  • Tire Technology
    • NRS is currently utilizing low weight/low rolling resistant tires for maximum efficiency. The low rolling resistance helps tractors roll further instead of expending unnecessary amounts of fuel to move nominal distances.

  • Use of biodiesel fuel
    • NRS has implemented the usage of biodiesel fuel - a clean burning alternative fuel produced from domestic, renewable resources in fleets and yard management across the country. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. By using Biodiesel fuel NRS is contributing to lowering foreign dependence on petroleum, lowering Carbon emissions, and saving money to pass on to our customers.
